We have always known that our very own Cheryl Beckwith is an All-Star, now the rest of the nation knows it, too!
Cheryl was chosen to represent Colorado and the Rockies at Major League Baseball’s All-Star Tournament in Minnesota in July. She was one of 30 teachers nationwide to be celebrated on the field – and on national television.
We are so very proud of Cheryl, who has been teaching Math, Science and Social Studies at Bill Roberts since the beginning.
After 43 years of teaching, you could say she has inspired an entire generation by making learning fun. Her contributions to the education of kids in Colorado are many:
She saw a need for history books written at an elementary-school level, so she wrote a short biography of a historical Colorado figure, geared to the interests and reading level of her third- and fourth-grade students.
In 2010, The Today Show hosted a contest for elementary school classes to win a trip to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. As part of it, students chose to do a service project. To support a classmate recovering from cancer, the class baked dog biscuits which were sold to raise money for service dogs for other kids with cancer. The class won, and Cheryl deserves a lot of the credit.
She is known for her wacky wardrobe, with an outfit for every occasion. She wears scuba gear to “dive into learning.” She dresses like an old-fashioned schoolmarm when teaching history. Her students understand that she puts a lot of effort into their education and that they should put the same effort in, too.
