Coach Umberger Named John Lynch Coach of the Month!

Coach Shannon Umberger has coached our middle school girls basketball team for six years, and has done so from her perch on her wheelchair.  She played basketball as a kid, but when a tragic accident left her in a wheelchair in high school, she knew her love of the game had to take on a different role. She teaches math and science to second graders, is a mom to three lively elementary-aged students at Bill Roberts, and serves on the school’s leadership team.

Our teams have performed at various levels over the years, but two years ago Coach Umberger led our girls to the championship game, where we took second in an exciting duel; last year we made it to the playoffs!

Coach pulls her team together through fundraising in order to buy matching warm-ups, embroidered with the girls’ names on the back.  She is also active outside of her coaching duties where she volunteers with Canine Partners of the Rockies helping train service dogs (where her service dog came from) and Adaptive Adventures.  She is go-getter and wonderful role model for our students!

Coach Umberger’s PROUD Qualities:

  • She’s an inspiration to students throughout our building. When another student who got his service dog last year, she was helpful with his transition to school.
  • Is competitive and sets high expectations for her girls.
  • Doesn’t let her situation get her down — ever.
  • Serves as a role model for all students with a “Never Say Die” message!

Each month, the John Lynch Foundation awards students and coaches for their accomplishments in academics, athletics and community involvement.  Students, parents or fellow teachers and coaches can nominate coaches who make a profound impact in the lives of their athletes and are chosen based on coaching accomplishments as well as inspirational and motivational attributes.

We are PROUD to announce that Shannon Umberger was chosen as January’s Coach of the Month!

Along with this prestigious award, Shannon will be invited to attend a ceremony at the Denver Broncos training facility in Dove Valley, where she will meet John Lynch, receive her award, media recognition and a behind-the-scenes tour of the facility. Way to go!
